New Google Keyword Tool

Recently Google introduced the Beta version of their improved Google keyword tool and I have noticed some subtle yet inspiring improvements including:

The average monthly search volume is now available locally as well as globally.
With the option to enter a website URL, the new Google Keyword Tool gives back more relevant keyword ideas.
Each keyword phrase included in the keyword ideas list is now a hyperlink which takes you directly to the Google search engine results page for the given phrase. This is convenient because it eliminates the need to copy and paste to see the number of competing sites.
An enhancement to the previous filter lets you select category and view options.
An option for "mobile network statistics" shows search volume generated through mobile devices.

Here is an example of the default keyword ideas page for the phrase "new google keyword tool":

It took me a few minutes to figure out how to filter out all other keyword ideas. The answer is not found within the list of categories but under the "advanced options". Just deselect "all keyword ideas" and select "Ideas containing my search terms" in it's place as seen in the screenshot below.

I still need to experiment with the additional filter options but I think these first few runs have been met with success. What do you think of the new Google Keyword Tool?

Google Is Scared Of Islam?

So I was looking at the recent list of most popular Google search terms and spotted this one: "google is scared of islam". Upon looking around it seems the buzz is over the fact that Google attempts to correct certain search terms. If you type "Christianity is" then google suggests "Christianity is a lie, fake, cult, etc". The same was true for the phrases "buddhism is" "Judaism is" etc… However if you searched for "Islam is" then google did not make any suggestions.

It seems that Google reacted quickly to fix/change this and some sites are saying that Google claims it was a bug.

That said. It seems Google was behaving in exactly the manner it has been designed to behave. Google looks at the entered search string and compares it to popular related searches. Since phrases like "Christianity is a lie" are more popular than "Christianity is" google made the suggestion. It is important to note that these suggestions are based on search data, not bias. So if bias is found, it is the bias of those that conduct the searches and add to the stream of search data.

For your edification, I looked up the monthly search volume for these related phrases:

judaism is evil	58

Please note. I'm not offering an opinion about whether or not these search phrases are correct statements. I am merely illustrating the montly global broad search volume as indicated by Google.

The top 100 domain sales for the year 2008 earned a cumulative total of $36,032,860 with the top performer going to fund.com at $9,999,950. Near the end of the list is cleaning.com, a developed site selling for $100,000.

Domaining is the act of buying and then reselling or leasing Internet domains for a profit. Sites are bought and then resold with the intent of capturing a large market share of search volume. In some cases the sites are developed and optimized for rank prior to sale or lease in order to further increase the value of the site. An individual who engages in domaining is referred to as a domainer.

Google Caffeine

On Monday, August 10th, 2009 Google announced that they have been working on a secret project, the next generation of search. Most users wont notice changes, but Search Engine Marketers will notice changes in rank and for those of you that have invested time to achieve rank through SEO, you may want to test drive the upcoming version of the new Google search engine to see if your site changes position.

Google welcomes feedback on rank results which you can provide by clicking on the "Dissatisfied.." link near the bottom of the test drive site after performing a search.

There is alot of speculation and discussion regarding Google Caffeine and few are providing official references but if you would like to read more, you can find the official notice at the Google Webmaster Central site.

At the time of this writing Google Caffeine is big news and ranked #76 in the top 100 trending google search phrases for the hour.
